In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Karan said that sarees are the “biggest gift” our Indian culture has given us. He also discussed why Indians tend to associate modernity with Western clothing. What is the issue? Karan went on to explain. Why is a western outfit associated with modernity? I have met a lot of women who wear sarees and they are all so elegantly progressive and up to date. They are also bright, well-read, well-traveled, and well-spoken. Simply put, we equate western clothing with modernity and development.

In the movie, Bhatt's character is shown as a strong, independent lady who received her education in the US. Karan claims that because Rani was raised by her mother and grandmother, “those influences are very strong” on the character.
